Environmental Forensics: Chemical Fingerprinting of Fuels

چکیده

1.1.1. Petroleum fuels It is estimated that between 1.7 and 8.8 million tons of petroleum hydrocarbons are released into the marine environment each year, with a best estimate of 3.2 million tons per year. Although major oil spills, like the Exxon-Valdez spill of 1989 or last summer’s Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, garner much media and citizen attention, you may be surprised to learn that tanker accidents only account for ~13% of the total petroleum hydrocarbon mass released to the environment. The remaining 87% is primarily released through smaller, less noticeable “spills”, such as washing of tanks and changing of tanker ballast water. The source of these less publicized spills can be difficult to discern. Additionally, approximately 0.3 million tons of petroleum makes its way into marine systems entirely via natural processes, such as natural seeps.

Chemometrics as a tool to analyse complex chemical mixtures Environmental forensics and fate of oil spills

Chemical characterisation of contaminant mixtures is important for environmental forensics and risk assessment. The great challenge in future research lies in developing suitable, rapid, reliable and objective methods for analysis of the composition of complex chemical mixtures. This thesis describes the development of such methods for assessing the identity (chemical fingerprinting) and fate (...

Sulfur dioxide emissions in Iran and environmental impacts of sulfur recovery plant in Tabriz Oil Refinery

Background: Combustion of fossil fuels contributes to sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. To deal with this issue, the government of Iran has appointed the oil refineries to upgrade their installations and produce high quality fuels. Thus, this study investigated the status of SO2 emissions in Iran and the capability of advanced technologies to control SO2 emissions. Methods: The status of SO2 em...

Fingerprinting Techniques for Target-oriented Investigations in Network Forensics

Fingerprinting techniques are receiving widespread attention in the field of information security. In this paper we argue that they may be of specific interest for the field of network forensics. In three case studies, we explore the use of fingerprinting techniques to improve and extend current investigative methods and showcase why fingerprinting allows for more target-oriented investigations...

The Study of Biological Technologies for the Removal of Sulfur Compounds

Combustion of sulfur components of fossil fuels such as oil causes the emission of SO2 in the atmosphere and lead to the formation of acidic rain in the environment. The conventional approach for desulfurization of fossil fuels is the chemical procedure of hydrodesulfurization (HDS). However, this method has low efficiency for desulfurization of ring components of sulfur such as dibenzothio...

Digital Fingerprinting Based on Keystroke Dynamics

Digital fingerprinting is an important but still challenging aspect of network forensics. This paper introduces an effective way to identify an attacker based on a strong behavioral biometric. We introduce a new passive digital fingerprinting technique based on keystroke dynamics biometrics. The technique is based on free text detection and analysis of keystroke dynamics. It allows building a b...
